How to create a bootable USB flash disk

installér windows XP fra USB-pen

Requirements for making a bootable USB memory stick:

·         USB memory stick (min. 1 GB)

·         Floppy disk boot image (Win 98 image included)

·         Virtual Floppy Drive (included)

·         WinRAR (included)

·         WinImage (included)

·         SMARTDRV.EXE (included)

·         Windows XP ISO image file (NOT included)

·         2 USB ports (one for USB stick, one for keyboard – USB hub can be used to increase the number of ports)

Legal note:
All included software is shareware or freeware. We (The authors of this tutorial) do NOT encourage any kind of piracy og illegal download nor sharing of files, but recommends the users of this tutorial to use a copy of their own windows XP CD to create the ISO file needed. We, the authors, can NOT be held responsible of any actions taken by those who uses this tutorial, if things (against all odds) goes wrong, we are not responsible, you follow this tutorial at your own “risk”.

Preparations:

Download the software package here: Software download

Extract all the files in needed_softs.zip, and install WinImage and WinRAR.

You will need to have an Image of your windows XP in order to complete this tutorial.

Open Virtual Floppy Drive, and assign a drive letter (A:):

Then we’ll select the floppy image to mount. In this case, the Windows 98 Boot Disk (included):

Click Open…

Click Browse…

Select the floppy image (winb98se.IMA) and click Open

Click Open once again

We now have a virtual floppy drive containing the Windows 98 boot floppy:

Open WinImage (included), go to Disk and make sure that Use floppy A: is ticked – then click Read disk:

WinImage now displays the contents of drive A: (including boot sector and all):

Next, we’ll switch to the USB drive, which in our case has the letter D:. Tick Use removable drive X: (where X: is the drive letter of your USB disk), and click Write disk:

WinImage will warn us that all contents of the USB disk will be erased, so make sure you haven’t got any important files (like pr0n) on it J.
Click Yes to continue:

Now just sit back and wait J

When this is done, we need to add SmartDrive to the USB drive. SmartDrive caches the data on the harddrive, and without it Windows takes AGES to install. Just copy SMARTDRV.EXE to the USB drive:

Create a folder on the USB disk for the WinXP installation files:

Locate your WinXP ISO image, right click and select Extract files… (Udpak filer… in danish):

Set the destination path to match the XP-folder which you created on your USB drive, and click OK.:

Now we’re ready to boot from the disk and install windows from our USB device.´

1.) Go to your BIOS (normally you do this by pressing the Delete button on your keyboard right after you have powered your computer on (just hammer away))

2.) Go to Boot priority and set USB floppy to first boot device. (If you don’t have this as a choice choose USB device or USB HDD). This is not guaranteed to work on all computers, but if you have an USB configuration (or similar) option in you BIOS, you can try experimenting with those. On the computer we tested it on, it was necessary to set it to Force FDD.

3.) Exit and save changes

4.) Boot up your computer, and the USB device should boot, showing the win XP boot options (With or without CD-ROM support, choose without)

5.) Run SMARTDRV (type SMARTDRV.EXE)

6.) Go to the XP directory (type cd XP)

7.) Go to the I386 directory (type cd I386)

8.) Run winnt (type winnt.exe)

9.) The installation should now start.

10.) Change back your boot priority so your hard disk is your first boot device
